We Live in a Polite Society
Most responsible gun owners live in what is often called a “polite society.” We generally expect others to follow social rules, avoid unnecessary conflict and violence, and treat people with basic respect. Because of this, many responsible gun owners naturally assume others around them share the same “polite society” values and behaviors.
News Flash: Violent criminals do not live by those same rules. Criminals are willing to ignore these “polite society” social norms and laws and, in some cases, are even willing to sacrifice human life to accomplish their criminal goals. Their decisions are not based on the same values as responsible gun owners – that is why they are criminals.
Personal defense training is not about paranoia or aggression. It is about recognizing the reality of the world we live in, developing awareness, and building the skills and mindset necessary to protect yourself and the people you care about if avoidance fails.
If we agree there are people in this world who will do unspeakable things to others without hesitation or remorse, then the next question for the armed citizen becomes: Will you allow it?
If your answer is no, then you must acquire the knowledge, skills, and mindset necessary to make reasonable, informed decisions and to defend yourself and others appropriately and effectively.
The First Step - Basic Gun Handling Skills
Basic handgun skills are essential for all shooters, but unfortunately, safe gun handling skills do not come naturally to most people. Negligent handling of firearms by those without proper training has resulted in many unnecessary injuries and deaths.
You should be proficient in these four fundamental skills to safely handle any firearm:

Determine the current condition of a gun in your possession, no matter what kind of gun it is

Keep the gun pointed in a safe direction, always, even if confirmed unloaded

Keep your finger off the trigger when not shooting, even if confirmed unloaded

Safely load and unload a gun, no matter what kind of gun it is
If you keep a firearm at home but don’t know how to handle it correctly, you put yourself and your family in greater danger. In many homes, the greatest risk may not be an intruder, but a lack of knowledge, training, and safe firearm handling skills.
The Second Step - Basic Concealed Carry Skills
If, despite your best efforts to stay aware and avoid danger, you face an immediate, deadly threat, you must be prepared to act quickly and decisively to stop it. That demands skill with your firearm, which only comes from purposeful training and regular practice.
You should be proficient in these four essential skills to responsibly carry a concealed firearm:

Quickly, safely, and efficiently present your handgun from concealment

Deliver rapid, accurate hits at realistic distances and within short time frames

Reload your pistol quickly and reliably

Clear common malfunctions and keep the firearm functioning
If you possess basic gun handling skills but have not learned the essentials of concealed carry, you may put yourself and others at risk. Until you develop those skills through training and practice, the responsible choice may be to leave the firearm at home.
